Corn 101: A Little About The Not So Cool Side Of Corn

Corn is one of the number one crops in the United States.

Corn is one of the number one crops in the U.S. But, did you know that genetically modified corn is made by joining together parts of viruses (promoter) and other infectious genetic parasites (plasmids and transposons) that spread antibiotic and multiple drug resistance genes via a process termed Horizontal Gene Transfer (You really don't want to know the specific pathogens on this one. It's super gross).

This is how the corn is able to thrive in and environment inundated with toxic pesticides. Also, this process is thought to be one reason why antibiotic resistance is on the rise.

Those pesticides have been shown to stay in the food on which they are sprayed and are not washed off in your sink. They are not cooked away on the stove. Theses chemicals go straight to your fork and in your belly.

These chemicals have a detrimental effect on the delicate microbiome (the organisms in your gut). A healthy microbiome is associated with EVERY SINGLE ASPECT OF HEALTH. If your microbiome is diverse and robust we see that those individuals are healthy. If the microbiome is sparse and uniform the health outcomes are generally negative.

So, what do you do. Steer clear of the corn! Especially non-organic GMO corn. Avoid processed foods since most have some sort of corn product in them and the labeling laws do not require companies to label GMO or non-organic ingredients up to a certain percentage.

That means if the label says non GMO Organic there could still be tainted products in it. My recommendation is to eat whole foods in a balanced diet, find out your food sensitivities and steer clear of those, limit sugar (and High Fructose CORN Syrup; don't get me started) and you should be in good shape.
