Mushrooms might be the next superfood. Here's why:

Mushrooms are the next super food if there ever was one. These fungi can be great for the immune system, nervous system, respiratory system and also may help with energy.

Mushrooms have selenium that can be used to help eliminate free radicals, which damage every cell in your body. Chromium and Vanadium are also found in mushrooms. These two help regulate blood sugar. It is a low glycemic food as well which helps with sugar control.

Vitamin D is also found in mushrooms, but this particular D is Vitamin D2 or Ergocalciferol and not the activated form found in supplements Vitamin D3 or Cholecalciferol. Our bodies naturally convert D2 to D3 by the liver and the kidneys if functioning properly. Pantothenic acid or B5 can also be found in Mushrooms which is great for muscle function and energy production.

Use Button or Cremini/Portobellos for a cough with phlegm or with diarrhea. Maitake and Shitake mushrooms are great for viral infections and certain cancers through activation of the immune system through Beta Glucans compounds found in the mushrooms.

Lion's Maine is used for memory and disorders of the nervous system and may be helpful with degenerative conditions like Alzheimer's. Cordyceps can help the body with energy production, recover from stressful episodes or help with endurance during rigorous exercise.

If you plan to  eat your mushrooms, it is important to get them from fresh, organic and local sources, or make sure to get a good quality of extract.

REMEMBER: When it comes to supplements you often get what you pay for. Other things to remember is for people that have gout or kidney stone issues might want to consult their doctor before adding mushrooms to their diet or as a supplement as they are significant sources of uric acid and oxalates.
